In the heart of the untamed wilderness, a gripping tale of bravery and resilience unfolds. The serenity of the riverbank is shattered as a group of 50 antelopes, driven by an unwavering instinct to safeguard their vulnerable young, find themselves face to face with a formidable adversary—the cunning crocodile.
With eyes blazing and hearts filled with protective fervor, the antelopes unite in a display of unwavering determination. Their hooves pound the earth in unison, creating a thunderous symphony of defiance. The crocodile, initially taken aback by the audacity of this united front, braces itself to defend its territory.
As the tension in the air thickens, the antelopes launch their assault with calculated precision. Their swift movements and coordinated strategy leave the crocodile momentarily bewildered. With swift kicks and powerful thrusts from their elegant horns, they strike with unyielding resolve, aiming to avenge the safety of their beloved offspring.
The crocodile, caught off guard by the relentless onslaught, finds itself overwhelmed by the sheer force and ferocity of the antelopes. Despite its formidable jaws and armored hide, the reptilian predator is no match for the collective might of the determined herd. Each antelope, driven by an indomitable spirit, fights with unwavering courage, their maternal and paternal instincts fueling their every move.
Desperation seeps into the crocodile’s eyes as it realizes the tide has turned against it. Its once confident demeanor crumbles before the relentless onslaught. The crocodile, battered and bruised, senses the inevitable defeat and makes a hasty retreat, slithering back into the murky depths of the river.
A victorious roar of triumph echoes through the savannah as the 50 antelopes emerge triumphant. Their mighty horns held high, their chests heaving with exertion, they stand as a testament to the power of unity and the lengths parents will go to protect their young. The adrenaline coursing through their veins is now infused with a profound sense of relief and accomplishment.
The riverbank falls silent once again, but the memory of this extraordinary encounter lingers in the hearts of both predator and prey. The antelopes, forever marked by their display of collective strength, continue their journey, their steps emboldened by the knowledge that they possess the power to confront and overcome adversity.
Through the lens, I saw it was a crocodile that had been dragged out of the water by a waterbuck, away from where I assumed it was caught, and that the crocodile was trying to pull the buck back into the water. Not being ready with the camera on a gimbal, it was very difficult at that distance to hold the camera steady and find the best image in the Canon viewfinder.
As the waterbuck tired, the croc managed to pull it back to the water’s edge, where the buck lay still for a while. After a short breather, the waterbuck then made a break for it when the croc changed its grip. The buck managed to hobble away but had a broken front leg. We stayed for a while to watch the other waterbuck checking out what had gone on.
“We were excited to see the battle for survival but at the same time sad to see the waterbuck immobilized. We had to book into Satara, so we left the scene when there was no further action.”
There were also a few passing vehicles at the scene and one foreign group stopped to ask Mr. Johnson what they were looking at, but this was already after the waterbuck had escaped.

When asked how rare this sighting was for Mr. Johnson, he replied; “Very rare!” Then shared some advice for anyone visiting the Kruger National Park. “Always have your camera ready and steady when you go out of camp, as you never know what you will see!”
As the sun sets on this captivating chapter of survival, the 50 antelopes return to their herd, their young ones sheltered beneath their watchful eyes. Their bond fortified by the trials they have faced, they embody the true essence of guardianship and resilience.
Driven by a fierce desire to protect their young, the 50 antelopes have etched their names in the annals of the wild. Their united rebellion against the crocodile serves as a reminder that even in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds, unity and determination can tip the scales in favor of the vulnerable.
In this untamed world where strength and survival dance hand in hand, the story of the 50 antelopes and their triumphant stand against the crocodile will be passed down through generations. It will forever inspire and remind all creatures, great and small, that when love and courage converge, even the mightiest of adversaries can be vanquished.
